BMW’s star of the Shanghai Motor Show, the Concept CS, looks to extinguish Munich’s ‘flame surfacing’ design philosophy for something altogether more elegant

Love them or loath them, the current range of BMW’s are almost without exception intelligently engineered, brilliant to drive and fulfilling to own. Nothing wrong with the substance then, but, to these eyes at least, much wrong with the style. And it’s all down to ‘flame surfacing.’ For the uninitiated, the story began in 1992, when American designer Chris Bangle, creator of the wonderfully quirky Fiat Coupe, was hired by BMW to move them away from a ‘one design fits all’ design philosophy and into the 21st Century.

Bangle kept his powder dry for the best part of a decade before a series of concept cars introduced a somewhat unconvinced World to what he christened ‘flame surfacing’, or design that blends curves and organic forms with sharp lines and edges. Just look at any of the current range (and especially the Z4) and you’ll know what I mean. Trouble is, it makes for fussy, and in many cases, dumpy looking cars.

Falcons are becoming increasingly common in town. Now a particularly imposing variant of the agile predator is conquering the road valleys with its broad wings: the Falcon based on the X6 by AC Schnitzer. It follows the styling features of the X5 version of the same name, already successfully launched. Other identifying marks are the striking wing extensions of PU-RIM, a high quality plastic which is far more flexible and robust than for example GRP laminate or deep-drawn materials such as ABS. The dimensions of the X6 in the attractive lengthways format are 70 mm wider at the front axle and 80 mm wider at the rear. In other respects too the Falcon is perfectly adapted to its habitat. Instead of sweeping through the sky, it swept around the North Loop of the Nurburgring in numerous laps until the chassis developers and Engineering Director Manfred Wollgarten were totally satisfied with the setup of the new AC Schnitzer springs. Now the X6 remains firmly on the ground even at speeds which a normal falcon only achieves in a nosedive. And of course, on every corner. Downforce instead of lift, was the motto in the design of the impressive plumage, styled by Chief Designer Michele Viandante. The aerodynamics package includes a front skirt with diagonal air inlets, and repositioned fog lamps. The submarining protection has been removed in favour of a dynamically contoured spoiler edge. The Falcon rear now wears a solid skirt with edge frame. In contrast to the original, all components are painted in body colour throughout, so that the body appears drawn further down and hence more dominant. Instead of the submarining protection also originally fitted here, AC Schnitzer has opted for a rear diffuser and completed the effect with a new rear spoiler.

The German tuning firm Novitec has revealed a styling package for the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, to be shown at next month`s 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. Slightly modified front spoiler, side skirts and sculptured rear end give the car more downforce. There`s also a new exhaust system and modified engine electronics cranking the horses up by 25 while the top speed is increased by 3mph.

In order to improve the cornering ability of this sports car, Novitec fitted KW`s aluminum suspension, which enables the driver to comfortably adjust the ride height from inside the cabin. Upgraded 405-milimeter Brembo brakes on all four corners are suitable for hard track use.

Black taillights are a typical Novitec touch that round out the exterior modifications.

Audi love to slow play their RS models but sadly for them the internet won`t comply and as soon as the rumours of another model slips out we`re all over it like vulchers. Don`t worry Audi, we still love the RS6 but our imagination loves to wander when we hear the RS5 might get a Lambo V10 engine. In reality we understand there is a recession on and you can probably only stretch to a 4.2 liter V8 engine but given the two very efficient turbochargers you intend to slap on it we`re sure to be more than satisfied. What is it 450-480 horsepower? Not bad. 0-60 mph of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph, can`t say fairer than that. We`re also bound to get at least 500lb ft of pulling power and some spares of the R8 like ceramic brakes, alloys and magnetic dampers. Sounds about right then to price it on a par to an M3 give or take the inflation by 2011 when we can actually buy one.
